What role do agricultural nets play in sustainability?
Agricultural nets play an essential role in both sustainability and sustainable development by optimizing the utilization of resources such as water, soil, and nutrients. They reduce pesticide consumption by acting as physical and/or optical barriers that prevent the passage of insect pests. The nets also diminish the risk of crop losses and enhance food security by safeguarding crops from climatic adversities like hail, strong winds, heavy rains, excessive sunlight, etc. Additionally, they offer better working conditions for agricultural tasks, providing shade and shelter to workers.
This system of protected agricultural production is remarkably efficient, boosting yields while minimizing resource usage. It enables the production of healthy crops and reduces the necessity for pesticides, thus mitigating or minimizing the risks these products pose to human health and the environment. Furthermore, it lowers production costs and increases profitability.
How do agricultural nets relate to different sustainable agricultural production systems?
Agri-food production systems such as integrated production, organic farming, and integrated pest management (IPM) inherently encompass the concept of sustainability. Overall, they use natural resources and production mechanisms, ensuring long-term sustainable agriculture. They employ methods of biological and chemical control (in the case of integrated production), always emphasizing environmental protection and food safety.
These systems, while successful in open-field conditions, attain greater control under protected agriculture, for instance, through the release of beneficial insects.
